Small, historical town, 53 km south-east from London. All shops, restaurants etc. in the resort. A city steeped in history, dominated by a fine Norman Castle and Cathedral, bounded by the maritime traditions due to the British naval dominance on the River Medway. Plenty of restaurants, pubs, cafes and an eclectic mix of antiques, fashion and art shops can be found in its charming streets.
The town was a favourite of Charles Dickens who lived nearby and based many of his novels in the area. Many sights are related to the famous writer, including a Charles Dickens Centre. In May Rochester hosts the Sweeps Festival, featuring the famous folk Morris dances and traditional food and drink and the Dickensian Summer Festival.
