Alonissos is the only inhabited island in the Marine park established to protect the Mediterranean Monk Seal. Excursions throughout the Marine Park present opportunities to examine this pristine marine environment, see dolphins and perhaps the endangered Monk Seal. Since there are restrictions against large noisy power boats in the Park, this presents an excellent opportunity to explore these secluded crystal clear waters by sea kayak and canoe.
The Northern Sporades are green islands (if you saw the movie. Mama Mia, with Meryl Streep, filmed in the Sporades, you will understand) and afford fantastic opportunities to enjoy the unparalleled Greek sun as well as enjoy the cool shade of conifer and deciduous forests. The forests and hills have well- laid out walking paths, some less than and hour and some routes the whole day. Maps are available and you can bring along a GPS to follow predetermined way points if you like. Scenic walks can take you through forests, along the cliff top views of the northern coast and down to beautiful secluded beaches.
Alonissos consistently receives awards for its beach qualities. Alonissos has recently won the Golden Beach Award. This award is an eco award for culture, environment, nature and beach. There is a great diversity of beaches within a few kilometres of each other - sand, pebble and rocky cliff beaches abound. We count 20 within easy access of the property. Water is unusually clear, even the port has crystal clear water and you will be astounded at the clarity of the water in the bays and beaches.
The beach nearest the property - Tzortzi (pronounced Georgi) is a sandy bay with water no more than 2m deep for the first 50m from the beach- an unparalleled salt water swimming pool! The taverna on the beach is one of the best on the island offering food from mid morning until late. We have a special arrangement with the owner for guests of our property offering discounted prices and the ability to pre -order off menu items. We can arrange the same discount for Leftos Yialo - another amazing beach ( our favourite!) just 7 minutes from the suites.
Once you settle in there you will not want to leave! The neighbouring tavern, Elionas, and beach bar, with beach umbrellas too, has wonderful home-cooked food and great atmosphere. You will be spoilt for choice- tavernas,, beaches and bars!!!
If you are into scuba diving then Alonissos has much to offer with 2 dive operations offering excursions as well as lessons if that's what you need. No fishing underwater with tanks though .... marine park rules! Perhaps you would like a fishing excursion on one of the islands fishing boats - this can be arranged and you are sure to catch something for dinner and learn something of the island and it's ways at the same time.
Food as always is the focal point of the day and the night! Restaurants are family run, each with its unique flavour and specialities. Sea food abounds as do the usual traditional Greek specialities. Of note are the local ouzeries which serve excellent food to accompany a lass of ouzo or perhaps the more traditional tziporo. Great value and a great time guaranteed.
